“Canada: From Numbers to Sounds” is a data-driven compositional project designed by Paraguay-born / Calgary-based musician and producer Marcos Codas, which started in October, 2013 and is now
being distributed through a video produced during the month of August, 2014.

The idea behind the project, which arose after completing some courses on music composition and production, was to “humanize” something usually perceived as “cold” (statistics, numbers, data), by
giving it a musical voice, therefore making it more relatable as well as more culturally relevant.

The system works by assigning either pitch or duration values to numerical variables within the data tables. After this somewhat arbitrary decision takes place, the random nature of the system takes
control and the musical notes are determined by the distribution of the numeral values coming from the tables.

The pieces composed so far were created using immigration and cultural diversity data from the 2006 Canadian Census, which was available through Statistics Canada.

The future of the system is near limitless, and short to medium term goals include the adaptation of the system to create musical pieces representing indigenous populations in Paraguay, as well as finishing a guide for people to use the system by themselves, to be distributed under a Creative Commons license.
